Wine & Wellness Wednesday: Hearth Health

Golly…it has been a minute, hasn’t it! Gracious…

Well…it’s February and hearts are on lots of people’s minds. Since yesterday was Valentine’s Day, I’m throwing it back a bit to a #winewellnesswednesday post when Valentine’s Day was a Wednesday ;) with a bit of an update.

Anyone who knows me knows I advocate for drinking plenty of water and that the quantity of water you need to consume depends on multiple factors, for example, your activity level.

Did you know staying hydrated is critical to heart health? Drinking enough water (or black coffee, or unsweetened tea) helps your body function efficiently, including your heart. If you stay hydrated, your blood vessels stay healthy, your circulation is better, and your heart will be healthier. So while I also advocate for drinking small quantities of red wine (or Concord grape juice!), make sure you keep a water bottle handy!

Cheers! Here’s to your health!

Water & Wellness Wednesday: Water, Water, Everywhere

It’s raining. Finally. I don’t exactly plan to go out and tilt my head back for a drink, however, even considering the road conditions during a torrential downpour earlier this afternoon, I am very, very, very happy it’s raining.

It’s easier to weed when the ground is wet.

However, I digress.

(Oh, come on. You’re accustomed to that by now, right?)

Water, water, everywhere, and not a drop to drink. Not really, but kudos to Samuel Coleridge.

Water is a precious thing, and incredibly necessary for healthy living.

You’ve (hopefully) seen me post about it on multiple occasions. I think you might get the point? Maybe? I’m a big fan of water. In fact, I have a glass with me right now.

Each year, as I get going on projects in my yard again, I start drinking more water. I’m better at it when I’m active than when I’m not, honestly. Today my chiropractor asked, “Are you drinking enough water?” to which I answered, “Probably not!” One of my general rules of thumb is that when I’m working outside, if I don’t need to run to the restroom regularly, I’m not drinking enough water. And that’s true whether I’m sweating a lot or not, but especially when the weather is hot and humid. We aren’t quite there yet, however, getting back into better water drinking habits is important.

I was very tired and really in something of a lousy mood today, so I did a little research. Namely, I Googled something I was already fairly certain about. And I was right. Staying hydrated is good for your mood. And if you’re in a bad mood, have a glass of water. Or two. I’ll quote one line from blog.mass.gov specifically: “Being dehydrated throws off the delicate dopamine and serotonin balances in the brain, natural chemicals that can increase/affect depression and anxiety.”

There are lots of really good reasons to drink water.

So. Go. Now. Have a glass of water. Stop whatever it is you’re doing and have a glass of water.

Well. Maybe after you finish reading this.

Cheers! Here’s to your health!

Water & Wellness Wednesday: Don't! Forget! The Water!

I like drinking water.

It might even be safe to say I love drinking water.

I like plain water, sparkling water, flavored water, flavored sparking water. The only kind I really don’t like is flavored sparkling water with artificial sweeteners. Ick. Not my jam.

Mmmm…jam…

Meanwhile, I digress.

I am great at remembering to drink water when it’s hot and I’m active.

I’m less great at remembering to drink water in the cooler, quieter, less active times of the year.

So this re-post of a favorite topic is as much a reminder to myself as it is to anyone reading: DRINK WATER.

What does it take for you to remember to drink water? Reminders on your phone? Cute aps where you can build aquariums as you record how much you drink? Water bottles with measuring lines on them?

Whatever works for you, get going and get it done! Drink that water!

Cheers! (With a glass of water!) Here’s to your health!

Water & Wellness Wednesday: Cheers to Water!

Ha!! Gotcha! I bet you were expecting another edition of Wine & Wellness Wednesday…

Well, you got it, but I am feeling quirky and I retitled the post for this week. (I know, I know. “Feeling” is different from normal quirky how, exactly?)

It’s warm. Depending on your perspective, it’s starting to be downright hot. We’ve already seen 90 this year, and we’re looking for 90 again soon.

Heat, wind, and humidity are terrific dehydrators. I spend a fair amount of time outside as well as in very warm greenhouses. I drink a LOT of water. On some days, even though I feel like I’ve drunk too much, it still turns out to be not enough.

With those things in mind, I decided it was time to revisit my old friend, my water topic. I also thought of some things that I didn’t put in the original post.

Drinking water isn’t just important for your insides. It’s critical for your outsides, too! Without sufficient water, your skin can become more susceptible to damage and wrinkling. (And don’t forget sunscreen! But that’s a topic for another day.) Water lubricates joints, regulates body temperature, and supports all critical bodily functions.

Do you feel like you drink enough water? There are apps you can use to keep track and to remind you to have a good guzzle. One that I like using is the Drink Water Aquarium. You can set your own goals and gamify drinking water by adding fish & scenery to a virtual aquarium. (No fish food necessary!)

What’s that you say? You don’t like the taste of water? Get a filter pitcher or bottle. Try a filter bottle that lets you add your own fruit or vegetables to flavor the water. Try a product such as Hint water; they have multiple flavor options. Put your filter pitcher in the fridge if you like it cold. (I don’t, but that’s me!) Try sparkling water. But have a drink of water! (Preferably, more than one!)

Cheers! Here’s to your health!

Water! Let’s talk about water. This is becoming one of my very favorite things. :) I’m one of those people who (mostly) likes the taste of water, and it’s one of my favorite beverages. (Although there is definitely some tap water that needs help. Lots of filtering. And lots of lemons.)

I’ve started asking for water with no ice and a few slices of lemon in it when I’m at a restaurant. Think about it: if you drink ice cold water with your meal, you’re chilling down the digestive fire and interfering with your body’s ability to process your meal (according to Ayurvedic medicine). Also, the lemon in your water will help you digest your food better.

There is, again, a fair amount of conflicting information on how much water a person should drink. Eight ounces per 10 pounds of body weight, or eight glasses that are 8 ounces each, or 10 ounce for each 15 pounds of body weight or or…Argh! What to do?

You’ll figure out what’s right for you. Definitely drink when you’re thirsty, and, in hot weather, drink before you’re thirsty. If you feel like having a snack, but maybe it’s not really hunger, you can figure it out by having a glass of water first. Or if you’re bored and feel like eating (or angry, or upset), try having a drink of water first.

One other thing about consuming water that I think is important to mention. In my last Wine & Wellness Wednesday post, I pointed out that if you’re not a wine drinker, you don’t need to start. Well, if you’re not a water drinker, you totally need to start! Water makes up a considerable part of the human body and it’s critical to your health to drink it!

Also! I’ve grown to love having a cold water end to my shower. The cold water chases blood away from the skin, back into the body where it circulates better and supports digestion better, and it helps me cool off after a hot shower. (Although occasionally I’ve gotten the shower too cold and the…we’ll say squeaks…have agitated our dogs!)

Cheers! Here’s to your health!

Wine & Wellness Wednesday: Water (Again!)

If it seems as though there's a trend to some of the topics I cover on Wine & Wellness Wednesdays, there's a reason for it. Some of the topics are quite important to me! Drinking water is one of those topics. This is a re-post of a re-post :) of one of the very first Wine & Wellness Wednesdays. Our weather (until today!) has been nasty and hot and humid, and one day at work I drank close to 120 ounces of water.

Water. It's your friend!

One of my very first Wine & Wellness Wednesday posts was on the topic of water. (Text included below.) When I reread it, my thought was “Yup! This is still right on.” I still prefer (mostly) room-temperature water, no ice, sometimes with lemon. I still finish my showers with a dash of cold water. And I still highly recommend becoming a water drinker if you aren’t one already. (That one is relative to “there’s no reason to start drinking wine if you don’t drink wine.” It’s from the very first Wine & Wellness Wednesday post!)
